Situated in the southeast of Guilin city and west bank of Li River, Elephant Trunk Hill is the symbol of Guilin. It looks like an elephant sucking water from the river with its long trunk, so it is named Elephant Trunk Hill.
On top of the hill stands a two-storey pagpda- Puxian Pagoda, which was built in Ming Dynasty and looks like the handle of a
sword. Between the trunk and the legs of the elephant is a full-moon like cave, penetrating the hill from side to side. When water waves under gleaming moonlight, the scene is exceedingly enchanting. This is the Water Moon Cave.
Inside and outside the cave, there are many carvings and inscriptions from the Tang and Song dynasties, of which the most well known is a poem by Lu You, one of the four great poets of Southern Song Dynasty.
